What’s it all about?
Batteries, smart use of second life batteries. There is of course so much demand for new batteries, and that won’t go away, but soon we have a lot of batteries too useful to recycle just yet, but not useful for electric vehicles of first use cases. Entrepreneur and founder, Jorgon Erdal shares his vision and experience building a business to take advantage of this opportunity, and to play a large and important role in the energy transition. We also delve into his background and the importance of proactively building company culture.
About Jørgen Erdal:
As the Co-founder & CEO of Evyon, Jørgen is fully devoted to maximizing the value of every Battery, by converting a growing volume of discarded batteries into high-quality battery energy storage systems. With his passion to create a positive impact on the planet, Jørgen and his team at Evyon are in a leading position to reach their ambition of becoming the European leader in reused batteries in 2025.
Jørgen is also a Co-founder of Protect Our Winters’s branch in Norway, a worldwide NGO working to raise awareness of climate change within the winter sports community.
As an ex-BCG consultant specializing in renewable energy strategy, financing, operating models, and more, he supported some of Europe’s largest energy companies to succeed in the energy transition. During his time at BCG, Jørgen was also the main driver of the local and regional sustainability activities of BCG as a company.
Jørgen holds a Master’s Degree of Science in Electrical Energy Engineering from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and ETH Zürich. Jørgen’s master’s thesis was to develop a stochastic optimization algorithm for how to operate a residential battery system in order to maximize its value under different tariff structures.
About Evyon:
Evyon is a Norwegian Antler portfolio company founded in 2020 by Jørgen Erdal and Radu Achihai. Evyon exists to enable maximum value generation from second-life batteries by repurposing them in a safe, data-driven, and cost-effective way. Evyon’s proprietary hardware and Battery Cloud ecosystem enable the conversion of EV batteries into high-quality, affordable, and plug-and-play battery energy storage systems.
Towards 2030, the amount of discarded EV batteries is estimated to grow to more than 200 GWh per year – the equivalent of more than 3 million EVs. Most of these are expected to be fully functional with >80% remaining capacity that can live on for 10+ years in a second life if you are able to identify them, repurpose them and operate them in an efficient and safe manner. This is exactly what Evyon is developing.
